Clinical Significance:
- Increased Levels: Observed in primary hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's disease with hypothyroidism, tumors secreting exogenous thyrotropin (e.g., lung and breast tumors), and during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis. Intake of lithium, potassium iodide, and thyrotropin-releasing hormone can also elevate thyrotropin levels.
- Decreased Levels: Observed in pituitary hypothyroidism, non-thyrotropin-producing tumor-induced hyperthyroidism, and with the intake of aspirin, corticosteroids, and intravenous heparin.
Normal Range: 2-10 mU/L
